This Week’s Product Pick

Toshiba TEC (Irvine, CA) introduced its DB-EA4D two-sided direct thermal label printer for the transportation and logistics industry. With small footprint of 9.3 in. (H) x 9.5 in. (W) x 8.9 in. (D), this device furnishes maximum print width of 4.1 inches with speed of 6 inches/second and resolution of 203 dpi. By using two thermal heads to simultaneously print on the front and back of direct thermal labels, the DB-EA4D eliminates waste and reduces labeling errors, according to its manufacturer. Additional benefits include an intuitive LCD backlight menu panel supported by color notification lights, auto-feed functionality, and tool-less replacement of essential components such as the print-head and platen roller. Seagull Scientific’s BarTender labeling software comes standard and an optional paper roll holder is offered. “At Toshiba TEC, we work hard to influence positive changes that lead to measurable environmental benefits,” declared Toshihiko Minato, GM of Marketing and Solution Division, Global Business Group, at Toshiba TEC in Tokyo.

Honeywell Combs ISVs for Android

Honeywell Scanning & Mobility (Fort Mill, SC) has unveiled its Developer Program for Android OS, giving ISVs and end-users one of their first opportunities to shape mobile computing products that will utilize the popular smart-phone platform. Participants will benefit from early product previews, dedicated technical support, and joint marketing and public relation activities, according to the vendor. Companies enrolled in the program at this early date include Aldata, ALK Technologies, Apacheta Corporation, Astea International, ClickSoftware Technologies, Cornell-Mayo Associates, Countermind, Mobile Tornado, Retail Pro, and Vodafone.

“Enterprises are demanding more flexibility and more options when it comes to mobile devices,” suggested Taylor Smith, Director of Product Management for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “Honeywell is one of the first AIDC hardware manufacturers to meet this need, presenting us with an opportunity to deepen the relationships we have with our partners and end-users, and work closely with them to develop new offerings that continue to meet their needs, without compromising the quality user experience they’ve come to expect from Honeywell.” As factors driving the new program, Honeywell noted that Android is highly customizable and familiar to large numbers of users.

“We expect the Android platform to continue making inroads into the enterprise and we’re excited for the opportunity to work with a leader like Honeywell to ensure that we stay ahead of the competition,” relayed Debbie Geiger, VP of Marketing for Astea International (Horsham, PA). “Like us, Honeywell recognizes that the line between consumer and enterprise solutions is blurring. By working so closely with their partners on this developer program, we expect Honeywell will see great success as they officially enter the Android space.”

New Developer Program for the Popular Operating System

[Editor’s Note:  As expected, Honeywell has completed its purchase of EMS Technologies, Inc., which includes LXE, for approximately $491 million. “Acquiring EMS Technologies demonstrates our commitment to build on our leadership position in the global scanning and mobility industry,” said Darius Adamczyk, President of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. “By adding EMS Technologies to our business, we will acquire complementary rugged handheld and vehicle-based products and expand our presence in warehousing, manufacturing, and port segments. These new products and segments will be growth drivers for our business.”]

Drill, Baby, Drill! Says TransAct

TransAct Technologies (Hamden, CT) has expanded into another specialty printing market segment, oil and gas, through its just-completed purchase of Printrex, Inc. (San Jose, CA). Founded in 1987, Printrex established itself as the worldwide leader in printers/plotters for exploration and drilling in these verticals. It also manufactures and markets printer subsystems for industrial, scientific, medical, vehicle-based, and kiosk environments.

“Printrex is a great company with solid technology in the growing oil and gas exploration industry, and it will be an excellent fit with TransAct,” explained Bart C. Shuldman, Chairman and CEO at TransAct Technologies. “With the demand for oil and gas rising around the world, we are excited to become part of this quickly expanding market. We will use our engineering, sales, and marketing expertise to continue the growth of the Printrex business through the introduction of new, innovative products and the expansion of sales into new markets.”

Purchase price was announced as $4 million plus contingent consideration related to new products under development. Printrex recorded sales of $5.4 million with an operating income margin that was slightly higher than TransAct’s in 2010, according to the two new partners. TransAct Technologies has shifted much of its focus in recent years to the banking and gaming sectors, although it still offers its Ithaca and Epic receipt printers through the POS reseller channel and markets through two-tier distribution.

TSC Tenders New Printer

TSC Auto ID Technology America (Pomona, CA) displayed its ME-240/ME-340 Series of four-inch thermal-transfer label printers at BlueStar’s VARTECH Show in Miami last week, as first previewed in RRN.Com. Model ME-240 prints at 203-dpi resolution and up to 6 inches/second; its print mechanism supports large 450-meter ribbons and 8-inch OD label rolls for use in manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, and healthcare. Model ME-340 delivers 300-dpi resolution and print speed of 4 inches/second, making it suitable for producing two-dimensional barcodes, fine text, and small-graphics labels, according to TSC.

“Our ME-240/ME-340 Series is loaded with standard features--yet is priced lower than comparable label printers on the market--and offers a wide selection of options and accessories that further enhance its capabilities,” volunteered David Lundeen, VP of Sales and Marketing for TSC Auto ID Technology America. As product highlights, he pointed to Ethernet, USB, USB-A Hosting, real-time clock and serial connectivity, six-button LCD control panel, 8 MB of DRAM/4 MB of Flash, and an SD card slot. In terms of physical characteristics, this pair of new devices lists small footprint, heavy-duty print engine constructed of die-cast aluminum, and an all-metal frame.

The ME-240/ME-340 comes with TSPL-EZ firmware that supports the most popular programming languages, including Zebra and Eltron, “right out of the box,” making it easy to replace older installed hardware. Other TSPL-EZ capabilities allow users to address stand-alone configurations and guarantee printing in the case of network failure. Options include peel-off kit, guillotine cutter, and independent keyboards, with two-year limited warranty provided by TSC, which also now stocks its TTP-268M/TTP-366M Series of heavy-duty, six-inch label printers, introduced in February.

General Takes Orders . . . for New Handheld

General Dynamics Itronix (Sunrise, FL) has entered the crowded handheld computer field with the debut of its GD400, running Microsoft Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5. Weighing less than 8 ounces, the GD400 comes equipped with ultra-sensitive GPS, barcode scanner/imager, 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, and 3.7-inch full-color touchscreen display. Featuring an IP-54 environmental classification, it gets powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 processor that supports NEON multimedia technology, thereby accelerating the transmission of large data files across Wi-Fi and WAN networks (Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g/n, and cellular).

“Using the GD400, utilities, law enforcement, or any mobile enterprise can immediately improve business operations, increase worker productivity, and reduce costs,” stated Mark Johnston, Director of Strategic Computing Solutions at General Dynamics Itronix. “By combining robust computing with cell phone-like functionality, the GD400 bridges the gap between the commercial and industrial worlds.” Available with numerous accessories, the GD400 has an MSRP starting at $1,829.

Previously, in June, General Dynamics Itronix shipped its rugged GD2000 for extreme work environments (such as military paratroopers jumping out of planes). About the size of two stacked paperback books, the GD2000 was designed to marry the mobility of handheld computers with the powerful performance of full-sized notebooks, according to the manufacturer. At just over 2 lbs., GD2000 carries an Intel Ultra Low Voltage Core Solo processor, integrated GPS and hard drive slot, 5.6-inch daylight-viewable DynaVue touchscreen display, 77-key backlight keyboard, and innovative zoom-in/zoom-out command button that lets users quickly and accurately adjust map and image views.

Synnex Treats Service "Fracture"

Synnex Corporation (Greenville, SC) has officially launched “RenewSolv,” its platform that allows resellers to manage their software/service renewals and hardware refresh through one dashboard. One notable feature of RenewSolv is its capacity for resellers to upload data for products not purchased through Synnex, giving them an all-encompassing view of their total business in specific areas. First previewed in May, RenewSolv comes complimentary to all Synnex resellers and kicks off with Microsoft and HP engagements, with additional vendors scheduled to be brought online over the next few months. “This is our answer to the current fractured practice of renewal management and product refresh,” remarked Peter Larocque, President of U.S. Distribution for Synnex.

In addition to its single dashboard and data upload capability, RenewSolv offers numerous benefits, according to its developer. Summarized briefly, these include: extensive analytics; warranty conversion and renewal rates; automated identification of uncovered equipment and warranty expiration, with quote creation up to 90 days in advance; e-mail reminders to resellers alerting them of upcoming events; co-branded storefronts; and integration with Synnex order management. Additionally, resellers can work with the distributor to manage all or part of the renewals process on their behalf, including making telephone calls to customers, reporting, and processing credit card orders. Future releases of RenewSolv are expected to include billing and collection for resellers as well as the dedicated self-service portal.

“We try to do the best we can to keep our renewals information in a central place so we can review and take action, but it is a losing battle that takes an enormous amount of time,” testified Mike Brogan, CEO/President of Erbs Technology Solutions (Cedar Rapids, IA). “Synnex has again stepped up to the plate to offer a way to improve productivity, decrease complexity, and generate new, sustainable revenue streams for its resellers. With RenewSolv, we will be able to know what’s coming up and what options are available for that product and to professionally communicate to and serve our customers in significantly less time than before.”

Payment Processing for Everyone

Sometimes it seems that everyone wants to sell POS. Case in point: Verizon Wireless (Basking Ridge, NJ) and Intuit (Mountain View, CA) have joined forces “to give all small businesses--from the sole proprietor to medium-sized businesses--the ability to process credit card payments on smart-phones and tablets.” To do so, the two companies will now offer Intuit’s GoPayment application and pocket-sized credit card reader in Verizon Wireless’ 2,300 retail stores and business-to-business sales channels. Verizon Wireless customers receive the GoPayment reader at no cost with activation of their account and mail-in rebate for the $29.97 purchase price. The GoPayment mobile app is free, of course, and the basic service has no monthly, transaction, or cancellation charges, while offering the discount rate of 2.7% for swiped transactions (or 1.7% with monthly fee of $12.95).

“Intuit’s GoPayment on America’s most reliable network is a mobile transaction game changer, and brings another dimension of must-have technology to the small business community,” said Mike Schaefer, Executive Director of the Business Solutions Group for Verizon Wireless. “Payments and transactions are often the biggest hurdle businesses face. Our value proposition is to streamline, simplify, and enable business owners to get paid with minimal delay. This collaboration with Intuit is an important part of our strategy to bring the most innovative online and mobile tools to our customers.”

“Rather than lose out on potential business, anyone who sells products or services can now easily and affordably give their customers the option of paying with plastic,” added Chris Hylen, GM of Intuit’s Payment Solutions Division. “GoPayment is meeting a huge need and is one of the fastest-growing mobile payment solutions in the market. With Verizon Wireless, we’ll help even more people discover that they too can process credit card payments on the phones or tablets they already own.”

jLAN Technologies (Hollywood, FL), which targets route accounting and sales force automation, and sells through resellers, has added jLAN Mobile Tablet Edition to its growing product line. Manifesting the next step in the evolution of jLAN Mobile for Microsoft Windows Mobile, this off-line order-entry system utilizes jLAN's proven synchronization technology to connect Windows-based laptops, netbooks, or tablets to the back-end enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. By allowing mobile sales representatives to see more data on the screen of such larger form factors, it helps to streamline the order-entry process, according to its developer. In particular, jLAN Mobile Tablet Edition should prove useful for food-service distributors, which typically ship their goods within 24 hours. Sales representatives may enter the order while on-site and instantly send it to the ERP, so it can be prepared immediately and delivery trucks can be staged earlier in the day. Speed of order-entry is also another critical element since food-service engagements tend to be very long. Here, jLAN Mobile Tablet Edition empowers sales representatives to view critical data such as item history, pricing, margin, and quantity, as well as approved product lists. Founded in 2001, jLAN holds the designation of Certified for Microsoft Dynamics (CFMD) and serves customers throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Sundrop Seated by Maitre’D

Sundrop Mobile (Orlando) has received certification for its mobile loyalty solution for Maitre’D POS by Posera Software (Seattle). Under Sundrop’s system, self-characterized as “Social POS,” the merchant collects the customer’s mobile number at the end of the POS transaction and Sundrop manages the rest of the process, including customer registration and profiling, social media connection, rewards distribution, and campaign evaluation. As additional benefits, cashiers are automatically reminded to prompt the customer to enlist in the merchant’s loyalty program, something often forgotten by busy staff members during the checkout process, according to the two parties, and no physical cards are required.

“We are delighted about our integration with Sundrop Mobile Loyalty,” commented Michel Cote, President of Posera. “This integration shows our commitment to the ‘Social POS.’ We’re looking forward to offering this solution to our VARs and clients.” In addition to the certification process, the two companies have agreed to an expanded co-marketing effort to promote the solution.

Sundrop also announced that Storm Duncan, former Global Head of Technology M&A for Credit Suisse, has joined its Board of Directors. Duncan has been actively engaged in the technology sector for nearly 20 years, working with such notables as Google, Microsoft, SAP, VeriSign, HP, Intuit, and Symantec, among others. “Storm is one of the most influential and recognized financial advisors in the technology sector, and we look forward to benefitting from his insights, relationships, and experience as a member of Sundrop’s board,” stated Travis Priest, Sundrop’s CEO. “Storm’s extensive understanding of both technology and finance will be an invaluable asset to Sundrop as we continue to execute our rapid growth strategy.”

Auto ID VARs Seduced by Jennifer

Lucas Systems (Wexford, PA) continues to draw admirers in the Auto ID channel with its Jennifer voice-directed warehouse system. Just recently, Barcoding, Inc. (Baltimore), one of the prominent national system integrators, has partnered with the vendor to jointly sell and market Jennifer VoicePlus, its flagship product. Notably, Jennifer allows customers to perform voice picking on the same terminals they already use for non-voice RF tasks. It supports hardware from Motorola Solutions, Intermec, DAP Technologies, and LXE, according to the company’s website.

“Together, Barcoding and Lucas deliver voice-directed warehouse solutions that provide greater operational improvements than any other option on the market,” "asserted Chris Sweeney, SVP for Lucas Systems. “Jennifer provides comprehensive voice-plus capabilities that allow users to utilize voice or scan barcodes interchangeably, ensuring they can work accurately and productively.” Earlier this spring, in June, Lucas Systems drew another major integrator, Stratix Corporation (Norcross, GA), into its ecosystem.

“Jennifer VoicePlus is the perfect extension to our mobility offerings for warehouse operations,” added Shane Snyder, VP of Sales for Barcoding, Inc. “Through this partnership, new and existing Barcoding customers will receive the full advantage of Jennifer’s next-generation voice-directed capabilities that drive higher Return on Investment (ROI) and lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) than older voice-only systems.” For its part, Barcoding, Inc. has been on something of a hiring binge, adding two veteran salespeople, Paul Dorado and Anthony Stepuszek, to its central regional office and Jeffery Zinn as general counsel and Regis Fitzgibbon as solutions architect at headquarters.

Cosi Waves Magic WAND

After six months of competitive testing, Cosi, Inc. has selected WAND Corporation (Eden Prairie, MN) to be the exclusive provider for all of its digital menu board technology. Cosi plans to install WAND’s screens in all new and remodeled corporate restaurants and, moreover, will encourage its franchisees to follow suit. “We see digital menu boards as the natural progression in the development of the Cosi brand,” indicated James Hyatt, CEO at Cosi. “The flexibility and efficiency of this technology will allow us to further enhance the guest experience.”

WAND’s digital menu board system will allow continuous upgrades to meet changing customer expectations, according to Cosi. In all, the “premium” convenience restaurant chain operates 81 corporate sites and 59 franchise sites across 18 states, the District of Columbia, and interestingly, the United Arab Emirates. WAND’s system was cited in particular for its easy-to-use content management and customization for each individual restaurant.

“Cosi is a growing brand who’s innovative nature meshes with our own determination to push the limits of digital menu board technology,” declared Greg Perrill, COO at WAND Corporation, which integrates with most major POS brands and has moved into the digital signage world rather adroitly. “We see strength in partnership along with evolution and awareness for the Cosi brand.” Earlier this year, in May, WAND placed its products with over 300 McAllister’s Deli locations, both company-owned and franchised. McAllister’s has subsequently reported double-digit sales increases at the digital locations.

Retalix Wheels and Deals

Retalix (Plano, TX) will supply its StoreLine POS software for Tops Markets, which runs 132 full-service grocery outlets in Upstate New York and Northern Pennsylvania. Mike Metz, VP of Information Technology for Tops, said his company was looking to upgrade its legacy POS software as part of its larger push to enhance customer service. The chain-wide rollout will begin in the first half of 2012 and should be completed over the next year, according to the two parties.

“We look forward to expanding our partnership with Tops, and helping them move customer service and store efficiency to a higher level,” noted Roy Simrell, President of Retalix USA. “Our retail offerings such as StoreLine provide merchants like Tops with the flexibility and efficiency needed to optimally operate high-volume, highly complex store environments, and thus enhance profitability.” In addition to POS and store functionality, StoreLine supports customer loyalty, self-checkout, fuel management, QSR, and electronic payment services.

Speaking of payments, Retalix also announced it has snapped up MTXEPS (Aliso Viejo, CA), an electronic transaction processor for retailers, delivered via Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and in-store models, and one of Retalix’s partners since 2004. Retalix laid out approximately $19 million in cash for all outstanding shares, with an additional consideration of up to $6 million over the next two years based on the achievement of certain performance metrics. To date, MTXEPS has deployed its services, directly or through channels, to 20,000 stores in North America.

“With MTXEPS’s premier electronic payment software solutions and large satisfied customer base, we enhance our market leadership in offering retailers comprehensive, advanced solutions across all customer touch points and sales channels,” reported Shuky Sheffer, CEO of Retalix in Israel. “SaaS is one of our growth engines, and MTXEPS’s SaaS platform and offerings enhance our position in this rapidly evolving space. Retalix will continue to nurture strong relationships with all MTXEPS customers and partners, and will continue to invest in innovative payment software solutions and attentive support.”

Channel Factoid

More than one-quarter of major U.S. retailers (27%) have no mobile presence and therefore miss out on key opportunities to gain customers, increase engagement, and generate revenue, according to the recent survey by 2ergo. In comparison, more than half of these retailers (58%) have mobile-optimized websites and exactly half (50%) have an iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry smart-phone application. Fully 35% of those reviewed have both mobile sites and at least one mobile application. Of those with mobile websites, 64% offer purchasing of goods and services, 17% display inventory locators, and 14% include an SMS opt-in function. Two-thirds (67%) of the top “non-store” retailers, including Amazon, Home Shopping Network, and Peapod, have both mobile sites and applications, which is more than double the total of those retailers with stores (31%). Not surprisingly, Apple leads the way in smart-phone applications, with 96% for iPhone, 56% for Android, and 17% for BlackBerry. As of now, only 7% of top retailers have launched applications for all three programs. Grocery, pharmacy, and convenience store retailers that are providing services such as personalized shopping lists, prescription refills, and photo processing relay on mobile apps (49%) more often than mobile sites (38%). Restaurants, including fast-food, clearly favor mobile sites over applications, by the difference of 74% versus 35%, and typically employ them for download-free access to location, menu, and reservation information. “Retailers should keep in mind that ‘mobile shopping’ is about more than just facilitating an on-device purchase,” advised Michael Scully, Managing Director at 2ergo Americas. “The goal of your mobile presence should be about offering real value to customers such as on-the-go price comparisons, inventory and store locators, easy access to customer service, and product reviews.”

HELLO GOODBYE

Hogan in the Heartland

Heartland Payment Systems (Princeton, NJ) has engaged David J. Hogan, former National Retail Federation CIO and SVP of Retail Operations, as its Executive Director of Major Accounts. In this new role, Hogan will seek to drive business growth among midsized-to-large businesses in the retail and hospitality industries. Prior to NRF, where he directed the association’s IT, supply chain, e-commerce, and loss prevention departments, Hogan held senior-level MIS positions with major retailers such as Duty Free Americas, The Limited, Inc., and The Kobacker Company, which sells footwear.

“Dave Hogan is an important and credible leader in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 merchant communities and is recognized for his broad knowledge of their technology requirements,” commented Bob Carr, Chairman and CEO of Heartland Payment Systems. “As we launch our expanding E3 and Mobuyle solutions and lead the industry into the adoption of the new EMV and NFC initiatives, we expect Dave’s passionate advocacy of merchant rights and his strong belief in our fair-dealing business model to help us change the game for many merchants. We are excited to have Dave join our team.”

Initially targeted at retail, Heartland’s Mobuyle (pronounced “MO-buy-uhl”) enables merchants to accept credit, debit, and gift card payments through their smart-phones or mobile devices via card swipe or manual entry--backed by the resources of one of the major payment processors. It features electronic signature capture, GPS location finding, merchandise picture storage, and voice authorization capabilities, and enables merchants to accept card payments even if they are out of range of cellular coverage or Wi-Fi access with store-and-forward (SAF) functionality. Merchants download the Mobuyle application at no cost from the Android Market and purchase the Mobuyle Encrypting Reader, which plugs into the phone’s audio jack, directly from Heartland. Later this year, Heartland will address Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, as well as restaurant environments, for which it is best known.
