Splash Down for CognitiveTPG

CognitiveTPG (Ithaca, NY) has reentered the surging mobile printer market with its new three-inch direct-thermal receipt and label device, the M320. Measuring 4.8 in. (W) x 5.9 in. (H) x 2.8 in. (D), and weighing 1.2 lbs., the M320 has rugged over-mold design and an IP-54 rated protective case against water and dust. It features print speed of four inch/102 mm per second at 203 dpi and supports Windows and Android (with iOS in development).

The M320 comes with Bluetooth or 802.11b/g wireless options, as well as USB cable for easy set-up. Additional technical characteristics include 4-MB Flash, 8-MB SDRAM, and ZCPL and CPCL emulations. A 2500-mAh Li-Ion rechargeable battery provides shift-level power and an accessory for tablets configures an all-in-one mobile device. Also, CognitiveTPG offers two-year warranty.

"People in the industry long enough might remember that CognitiveTPG--then Cognitive Solutions--was actually the first to market a mobile printer in 1988, well before the demand was there," recounted Angela Mansfield-Swanson, CognitiveTPG's Marketing Director. "We are back and ready to make a splash with our new M320 printer which can be used to print receipts or labels on the go, widening its applications and appeal." According to Nigel Ball, CognitiveTPG's VP of Sales and Marketing, the M320 has been rolled out to partners, with installations planned for healthcare, field-service, and retail.

Will Amazon Flood POS?

With "Amazon is Coming!" having replaced "Vikings are Coming!" in retail these days, now comes news of Amazon Local Register. An expected combination of credit card reader and mobile app for smartphones and tablets running iOS and Android, including Kindle Fire, Amazon Local Register seeks to kneecap rival payment schemes such as Square, PayPal, and Google Wallet with low processing fees. Customers who sign up before October 31 will receive low promotional rate of 1.75% per card per swipe on all major credit and debit cards until January 1, 2016. After that, the rate becomes 2.5%--still less than Square (2.75%), PayPal (2.7%), and Google Wallet (2.9%).

There's no charge for download of the app, of course, and cost of the $10 dongle will be credited against your processing fees. Money from transactions will be deposited directly into your bank account within one business day, through conventional payment channels, or may be spent on amazon.com within minutes, conveniently. Customers may purchase the card reader directly from Amazon (with free two-day shipping) or by stopping at their local Staples. In addition to such convenience, more advanced features such as customer support and business tools have been promised.

"Shop for compatible accessories including cash drawers, receipt printers, and stands," reads the announcement from Amazon. "Find everything you need to build a point-of-sale system including massive selection, available at the best price, all on amazon.com." Yes, indeed--$230 cash drawers for $85, $298 receipt printers for $130 (check for yourselves). A race to the bottom, for sure, but hopefully limited to individuals such as the make-up artist, gallery owner, and massage therapist who contributed endorsements.

Datalogic Unholsters Guns

An entry-level, wireless, two-dimensional scanner from Datalogic (Eugene, OR), the QuickScan 2400, has been introduced in two versions: QBT2400 (with Bluetooth Version 3.0) and QM2400 (with Star 2.0 Cordless System at 433 MHz). Weighing about 7 oz., without accompanying charger/base station, these devices target shelf replenishment, inventory, price checking, and point-of-sale, as well as access control, ticketing, and postal markets. Specifications include 1400-mAh Li-Ion battery, IP-42 ratings, 5 ft./1.5 m drops to concrete, and overall 82 ft./25 m transmission range.

As always, Datalogic has emphasized ease of use, in this case the combination of two blue LED targeting triangles with soft, dark red illumination. Other attributes found in these cordless scanners include so-called "Green Spot" technology for good-read feedback, alternative battery recharging via USB/Micro USB, and batch-mode capability of 500 linear codes in memory. QuickScan QBT2400 has compatibility with iOS and Android devices, of course, while QuickScan QM2400 provides secure narrowband communication with no resistance or interference from concrete walls, metal shelving, or Wi-Fi.

"Datalogic has once again employed its inventive and innovative technological approach in the design and development of these two cordless imagers, while keeping the needs and comfort of its customers in sight," related Giulio Berzuini, GM and VP of the Datalogic ADC Handheld Business Unit and VP of Sales for ADC EMEA. "In so doing, we are proud to provide these ergonomic, durable, and reliable imagers that ensure excellent general purpose scanning at a very attractive price." Earlier, Datalogic also announced its new manufacturing facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Sign of Times at ID Tech

ID Tech (Cypress, CA), known for readers, scanners, and keypads, has expanded into digital signage. As its first product in this area, it will offer its "low-cost" 21.5-inch outdoor display with 1920x1080 resolution. With infrared touchscreen, this subsystem delivers connectivity options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LAN, USB, and RS-232, as well as built-in webcam for customer communication and detection.

It has been designed to operate under temperatures as high as 140 Degrees F, and with heater, as low as -40 Degrees F. For extended protection against harsh weather, the exposed front bezel furnishes IP-65 ratings. An anti-reflective coating reduces glare, and protective film defends against damage. Finally, automatic brightness control helps keep the screen visible in sunlight as well as conserving energy at night.

"ID Tech is once again successfully expanding its expertise using our core strengths and technologies to penetrate a new segment and industry," remarked Eric Lecesne, COO and VP of Products. "Our first digital display is another high quality and robust offering which meets our industry-leading standard of developing and manufacturing dependable and feature-rich products." This new display will be officially released at Customer Engagement Technology World in New York City in November.

A Pipeline for P2PE

An interesting trio of vendors--Ingenico (Atlanta), FreedomPay (Radnor, PA), and ScanSource (Greenville, SC)--have joined forces to deliver fully functional PCI-DSS Certified Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE). Leveraging secure devices, applications, and processes, in particular Ingenico's On-Guard and the FreedomPay Commerce Platform, this bundled solution covers payments made by MSR, EMV, and NFC, according to the new partners. ScanSource will provide product support, integration, staging, and deployment services, reportedly.

"There is a lot of misinformation in the market today regarding payment security standards," indicated Tom Durovsik, CEO of FreedomPay. "Our solution is the best option for merchants looking to prevent breaches and ensure their capital investments are ready for future payment technologies such as EMV and NFC. We have even gone the extra mile, ensuring that merchants can accept hand-keyed or phone-based orders, and still preserve the ability to type in a card number if the magnetic stripe is bad. All the while, helping reduce the scope of the merchant's cardholder data environment."

Ingenico's On-Guard P2PE is comprised of three certified components: encryption module, decryption module, and key management. With embedding in its Telium Platform, the encryption module supports the complete range of payment terminals from Ingenico. An early adopter, OTG Management, based in New York City, has rolled out this newly formed Ingenico/FreedomPay combination to restaurants and eateries in ten of the largest airports in North America. "This is the only option with full certification," testified Albert Lee, CTO at OTG.

Tipping the Maitre'D

Another major POS ISV, Maitre'D, from Posera-HDX, has tied to LevelUp. This partnership will enable Maitre'D to directly execute payments made via iPhone and Android through the LevelUp App. It will go live in Manhattan this month and then roll out to merchants running Maitre'D and LevelUp.

"At Maitre'D, we aim to offer the most feature-rich and customizable restaurant POS system on the market," relayed Michel Cote, President at Maitre'D (Seattle, WA). "With so many merchants accepting mobile payments, it made complete sense to partner with LevelUp. We want to make sure our clients have everything they need to manage their business."

"Thanks to the new integration, when customers pay with any LevelUp App, clerks won't have to take any extra steps," elaborated Seth Priebatsch, CEO and "Chief Ninja" at LevelUp (Boston), which has also drawn the interest of Wand Corporation (Eden Prairie, MN). "Down the road, the integration will also enable businesses to better collect SKU level data and run SKU level marketing campaigns to drive revenue and visit frequency." LevelUp currently has 1.5 million users and 14,000 accepting businesses, according to the company's figures. Long prominent in our channel, Maitre'D has over 20,000 customers worldwide.

Somewhat quietly, Manhattan Associates (Atlanta), long known for its warehousing and supply chain prowess, has purchased Global Bay Technologies from VeriFone. This adds Mobile POS, as well as Clienteling, to Manhattan's Inventory and Order Management. VeriFone's Global Bay Merchant Solution, targeted to small retailers, will be retained by VeriFone and rebranded in the coming months. "Our decision to acquire Global Bay was driven primarily by our customers asking us to extend our omni-channel scope within their stores," reported Eddie Capel, CEO of Manhattan Associates. "Moving beyond inventory and fulfillment and into sales and clienteling is one way we'll provide a comprehensive store platform with omni-channel at its core. For our customers, this means that they will now have the ability to unlock the information that presents a single view of customers, orders, and inventory--and thus deliver the industry's only true omni-channel sales and fulfillment platform."

NCR Climbs the Beanstalk

NCR (Duluth, GA) has called upon Beanstalk Data (Charlotte, NC) to extend consumer-behavior-based marketing. Under this agreement, Beanstalk Data will integrate its CRM Marketing Master into NCR's Aloha POS, while simultaneously developing delivery via NCR Cloud Connect. Beanstalk allows brands to connect multiple silos of customer data, with resulting benefits in segmentation, multi-channel campaigns, and final analysis, according to the two new partners.

"The secret sauce of the Beanstalk Data platform is our ability to execute real-time marketing actions based on the vast interactions the consumer has with the brand," enthused Scott Nowokunski, CEO of Beanstalk Data. "Integrating with the point-of-sale is critical to making this happen." Founded in 2009, Beanstalk Data has attracted restaurants such as Taco Bell, Pollo Tropical, Carl's Jr., Panda Express, and Islands Restaurants, as well as Xpient (Charlotte, NC) and Vivonet (Burnaby, BC, Canada) as ISVs.

"As the leading provider of technology to the restaurant industry in the U.S., NCR is committed to bringing a wide variety of in-house and third-party SaaS based marketing providers to our customers, adding more value to their businesses," expounded Paul Langenbahn, President of NCR Hospitality. "Using this new integration platform, our customers can choose the technology that is the best fit for their operations and for delivering exceptional experiences to their guests." Elsewhere, NCR has added 24/7 support for its Silver Tablet POS. Previously, support ended at Midnight EST.

Mighty Widget at DineTime

Our ISVs continue to show resilience in the face of ever-evolving POS. Latest case in point: QSR Automations (Louisville, KY), which has added online reservations and e-mail marketing with the launch of DineTime Host Version 3.0. A simple browser widget on the restaurant's website allows booking information to be synched in real-time with the guest register, according to QSR. By using contact information saved in DineTime, which runs on iPad, and supplies other features such as wait-list management, two-way SMS texting, and operations analytics, the restaurant also may easily promote events, new dishes, and special offers.

"Our work for the last fifteen years has always been on the forefront of restaurant technology, and this release is no exception," proposed Lee Leet, CEO/President of QSR Automations. "DineTime now streamlines guest management and online reservations in one app. We knew restaurants wanted an alternative to what's out there--and they want one they can trust."

Pricing for DineTime is tiered, and based on the number of wait-listed and reservation parties the restaurant takes monthly. Cost is capped at $199 per month for an unlimited number of parties. DineTime is currently offering two-month free trial of the new online reservation feature, which even suggests you invite your friends when you use it.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD

Heartland Bags Leaf

About on schedule, Heartland Payment Systems (Princeton, NJ) has snapped up the rest of Leaf (Boston), the so-called "purpose-built" tablet and accompanying software platform for retail and hospitality POS. In September 2013, Heartland invested $20 million in Leaf, RRN.Com readers will recall. Leaf will continue to be payments agnostic, working with the majority of domestic processors and building outside distribution relationships, according to the two parties. Terms of this recent transaction were not disclosed.

"Heartland clearly sees the potential in Leaf's longer-term vision to provide an open marketplace of business services for small and medium enterprises," suggested Sarah McCrary, Leaf's CEO. "What we're doing is a big undertaking, and with Heartland's backing and full commitment, we can focus 100% on the product while knowing that we'll have the resources we need." Following the acquisition, McCrary will continue as CEO, and Co-Founder Sebastian Castro will continue in his role as "Chief Technical Evangelist."

Leaf has built its system along three lines: the Leaf Presenter, the Leaf Business cloud-based analytics and management platform, and the Leaf App Store. Features of Leaf Presenter include one and two-dimensional barcode reading, front and rear cameras, high-resolution display, and support for EMV and NFC. Above and beyond core card processing services, value-add such as payroll, loyalty, mobile commerce, and online ordering can be run through the Leaf Presenter. As expected, Leaf follows the pay-as-you-go philosophy, charging merchants $50 per month for Leaf Presenter and Leaf Business.

. . . While Cedar Tree Sprouts

A new company in handheld computing has sprung from Juniper Systems. "By leveraging the wide array of apps and services available through the Android O/S, Cedar Tree Technologies offers users complete rugged data collection out of the box," declared Rob Davis, who has been named as GM of Cedar Tree. "Add to that the fact that you can purchase one of these durable devices for about the same price as your smartphone, and it really makes it an easy decision."

In addition to Davis, both David Rockhold, Operations Manager, and John Gilman, Product Engineering Manager, have previous experience with Trimble. Also, Cedar Tree is based in Corvallis, Oregon, similar to Trimble Navigation. Two new products have been debuted, the CT7 tablet (seven-inch display) at MSRP of $899 and the CT4 handheld (four-inch display) at MSRP of $489.

Targeting outdoor applications, including mapping and field-service, CT7 and CT4 feature front and rear cameras, GPS, 1-GHz Quad-Core CPU, and Wi-Fi and WCDMA. CT7 has 7000-mAh Li-Ion battery and IP-67 ratings for water and dust, while CT4 has 3000-mAh Li-Ion battery and IP-68 ratings for water and dust. "Cedar Tree Technologies builds upon Juniper's product offering, providing customers with a broader range of choices," explained Rob Campbell, CEO of Juniper Systems (Logan, UT). "This additional product variety allows customers to find the best fit for their needs, whether maximum ruggedness from Juniper Systems or very durable product that runs on more consumer-like platforms from Cedar Tree."

. . . And Touch Dynamic Branches Out

Touch Dynamic has taken new offices in Texas and Florida. In light of continuous growth, Touch has sought out larger locations, doubling size in each case. In Texas, it will occupy 6,000 square feet at Roxburgh Drive in Houston. In Florida, it will move from Hialeah to 3,000 square feet at Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines, both north of Miami.

"These new locations will give Touch Dynamic additional size to accommodate the current operational needs and the expected future growth of the company," reported Craig Paritz, President and Owner of Touch Dynamic. "Our goal is to expand and develop our product lines and to continuously push our industries forward, and this move will help us do that." At the recent RSPA Show in Orlando in August, Paritz shared details of several new products, including an All-in-One POS and Windows Tablet, which will be covered in future editions of RRN.Com.

Its two new offices will provide more room for testing, larger warehouses, and ultimately, better overall integration, according to Touch Dynamic. These moves will also lead to an expansion of the workforce. In all, Touch Dynamic has four facilities across the U.S., including its headquarters in Irvington, New Jersey, and an additional site in Sherwood, Oregon, under the supervision of Toby Jensen.

HELLO GOODBYE

POS-X: Oh, Canada!

POS-X, LLC (Bellingham, WA) has appointed Mark Dunlop as its Regional Channel Manager - Canada. An industry veteran with two dozen years of experience, Dunlop began his career in POS & Auto ID distribution with SDMS, Ltd. He served as Country Manager for Honeywell Scanning & Mobility, and most recently, as Director of Global Distribution for Code Corporation. He will be based in Vancouver, Canada.

"POS-X has really impressed me throughout the past several years," shared Dunlop. "This relatively small company stands out from the other manufacturers and has been making quite an impressive name for itself. Their reputation of being channel friendly, putting customer service and support above all else, and that of being a truly great, fun group of people really made my decision of joining the team an easy one. Resellers looking for hardware at a great value offered by a team of experts that know POS should be reaching out to POS-X."

"Earlier this year, we formed regional channel teams in order to better service and support our customer base," detailed Nick Melnyk, VP of Sales and Service at POS-X. "With Mark coming on board we have modified our regional coverage to now be Eastern U.S., Western U.S., Latin America, and Canada. Mark is a POS industry expert who has a great deal of experience working with resellers, distributors, and ISVs. He will be a great asset to the company and a fantastic resource for the resellers throughout Canada."

A Move to Mainstreet

Mainstreet, Inc. (Grand Prairie, TX), an independent reseller of POS, has enlisted Terry Kasen as its VP of Client Engagement. Kasen brings more than two dozen years of participation in retail IT, starting with positions in sales and marketing for IBM Retail Store Solutions. More recently, he worked for solution providers as VP for Retail and Hospitality at Zones, Inc., preceded by much time as Business Unit Director for Agilysys, Inc.

"Terry brings relationships, leadership, and strong industry knowledge to an already well-established team at Mainstreet," commented Sharon Moore, CEO and Owner of Mainstreet, Inc. "He will focus on existing customers as well as engaging with new retailers and technology leaders. We look forward to working with him to further build our business and extend our industry reach."

Among vendors, Mainstreet lists HP, Microsoft, Epson America, Datalogic, and Elo Touch Solutions. Last spring, it was awarded the POS refresh for Stage Stores, which has more than 850 locations--including Bealls, Goody's, Palais Royal, and Peebles--in forty states and targets small and mid-sized towns and communities. For this install, Mainstreet customized the HP rp7800 POS Platform.

Further Jibing at JDA

JDA Software Group (Scottsdale, AZ) has raised two executives to senior leadership positions, as it continues to push the pace of its strategic repositioning. As EVP and GM, Razat Gaurav will lead the new Global Industries and Solutions Business Unit. Formerly SVP of International and Strategic Initiatives, he joined JDA from i2 Technologies in 1999. His expertise spans product management, marketing, and sales, all centered around supply chain and retail, according to the firm.

In addition, Enrique Rodriguez has been appointed EVP and Chief Sales Officer. Rodriguez joined JDA early this year as SVP for Strategic Accounts, after spending thirty-four years at IBM. Throughout his career, he led IBM sales teams in North America, Asia, and Latin America. Familiarly known as "Quique," he has global responsibility for revenue generation through JDA's Sales and Alliance Teams.

"Both Razat and Quique are proven leaders with the industry knowledge and experience to advance our strategic initiatives--which are laser-focused on delivering great results for our customers and our company," proclaimed Baljit Dail, Chairman and Interim CEO at JDA. "We have an unparalleled set of solutions and services to deliver game-changing results to companies worldwide, and we're pleased to have Razat and Quique in these new leadership positions to help us take advantage of the tremendous market opportunity in front of us." In May, longtime JDA CEO, Hamish Brewer, was encouraged to resign.
