Datacap Tethers Tetra

Datacap Systems (Chalfont, PA), payment middleware provider to the channel, well-known for its "NETePay," has completed EMV Level 3 Certification for the Tetra Series of terminals by Ingenico Group (Alpharetta, GA). In all, it covers three models and seven terminals: Lane (3000, 5000, 7000, 8000), Move (3500, 5000), and Link (2500). It extends the existing Telium Series by Ingenico currently employed by Datacap's network of VARs and ISVs.

"Ingenico Group's Tetra line of terminals is an ideal addition to Datacap's integrated payments solutions," relayed Justin Zeigler, Director of Product at Datacap Systems. "The breadth of hardware options enhances installation flexibility and generates new sales opportunities for our point-of-sale partners while maintaining Datacap's industry-leading feature-set. We're looking forward to expanding support for Tetra in 2019." Also in Ingenico's Tetra Series: Axium D7 and Desk (3500, 5000).

In addition, Datacap has announced support of incremental authorization for bar tabs without the presence of the payment card. Available previously for car rental or lodging, such capability may be used to add to an existing transaction or to allow for revised estimate of what the cardholder may spend. As initial certified processors of this enhanced solution, Datacap has Heartland Payment Systems/Global Payments, TSYS/Cayan, and Worldpay/Vantiv, Zeigler told RRN.

Zebra Dishes DS9900

Zebra Technologies (Lincolnshire, IL) has unboxed its DS9900 Hybrid Presentation Scanner. Intended for the front counter, and corded, the DS9900 handles 1D, 2D, Digimarc, and OCR, with first-pass read rates of up to 240 in./610 cm per second. In support of performance, it features a strong microprocessor (800 MHz), high-resolution megapixel sensor (1280x800), wide field of view (48 H x 31 V Degrees), and the company's "Intelligent Imaging Technology" (dubbed PRZM).

As dual-purpose, thus hybrid, device, it switches easily--via capacitive touch sensor and accelerometer--between hands-free and handheld modes. A "preferred symbol" capacity of the DS9900 eliminates the need for checkout workers to physically cover the barcodes of nearby items when in hands-free, or presentation, mode. In the case of handheld mode, the scan range is extended up to 24 in./62 cm to reach items in the shopping cart. Also, the company's "Intelligent Document Capture," activated by trigger, accepts checks, text, and certificates.

"Created from the ground up," according to Zebra (so not merely retrofitted with base, in other words), Model DS9908 measures 8 in. (H) x 3.7 in. (W) x 5.2 in. (D), and weighs 11.6 oz. With single circuit board and recessed scan window, it carries an IP-52 rating for water and dust, drop resistance of 5 ft./1.5 m, and tumbles of 2,000 at 1.5 ft./0.5 m. As shipped, the scanner is configured for common applications, with "auto-host" detect cables. A Model DS9908R adds RFID.

Bixolon Fields SPP-L310

Bixolon America (Gardena, CA) has rolled out its new 3" mobile thermal label printer, stocked as Model SPP-L310. In compact size of 4.1 in. (W) x 5 in. (L) x 2.3 in. (D), weighing 1.1 lbs., with battery and paper, the SPP-L310 has maximum print speed of 5 in./127 mm per second at 203 dpi with media roll diameter up to 1.9 in./49 mm. It offers 128/256-MB RAM and 256/512-MB Flash, with USB 2.0+Serial or USB 2.0+Bluetooth+WAN and support for iOS, Android, and Windows O/S.

As additional features, the SPP-L310 has adjustable media guide, splash-proof design, status sensors, rechargeable 2600-mAh Li-Ion battery, an IP-54 rating for water and dust, and 6-ft./1.8-m drop resistance. As programming languages, there's SLCS, BPL-Z, and BPL-C, with "Easy Bluetooth Pairing" via NFC and "Smart Wi-Fi." As software for label design, Bixolon cites its own free Label Artist and Artist Mobile, as well as BarTender and BarTender UltraLite by Seagull Scientific (Bellevue, WA). As expected, it accommodates linerless media.

"As a global leader in portable printing, Bixolon highly believes its customers have the right to choose a reliable yet affordable model for low to medium volume labeling applications," declared Paul Kim, GM of Bixolon America. "The SPP-L310 is the latest mobile printer aimed at the logistics and retail market due to its ergonomic design with proven-level functionality and flexible technical support to enable customers to easily integrate mobile printing into their applications." (FYI: In addition to its family of receipt printers, look for an increased emphasis on label printing this year from Bixolon America, RRN was told.)

Epson Sends to Vend (Its TM-m30)

Epson America (Long Beach, CA) will supply its cube-shaped 3" TM-m30 thermal receipt printer for ISV Vend (San Francisco, CA). Utilized at the point-of-sale, Epson's TM-m30 will support the Vend Register App for iPad or web-browser solution for Mac and PC. In making its announcement, Vend cited the compact, modern design of the TM-m30 (measuring 5 in. x 5 in. x 5 in.), along with opportunities in "future-proof" mobile retail models such as pop-ups, fashion trucks, and show rooms, as well as capability to print from multiple devices. Founded in 2010, it serves approximately 25,000 stores worldwide

"We believe in providing a world-class, one-stop-shop POS solution for our customers that allows them to run their entire business from a central system while giving them the choice and flexibility to use the tools they prefer," reflected Jake West, Director of Business Development at Vend. "Partnering with a best-in-class system like Epson allows us to do just that. The company's dedication to their partner programs and channel ecosystem was also an integral part of our decision to join forces."

"Vend is a feature-rich retail platform for POS," testified Tom Kettell, Director, Commercial Channel - North America, for Epson America. "Their dedication to integrating with the best solutions in the market gives retailers the ability to choose the tools they need to make smart decisions. We are delighted to be the partner of choice to bring flexible printing solutions for their clients. Together, we can empower retailers with the latest technology, and allow them to spend more time focusing on unique customer experiences."

TSYS: My Aim is "Tru"

A new partnership brings customer feedback from TruRating to the Genius Customer Engagement Platform by TSYS. In order to increase response, the solution by TruRating operates on the principal of only ever asking one rotating question per customer. A response rate of 88% has subsequently been cited, and online dashboard and mobile app are included. (Another benefit: no customer data is engaged.)

"Merchants have to constantly listen to their customers in order to stay relevant," indicated Henry Helgeson, President and EVP, Integrated Solutions, at TSYS Merchant Solutions. "Genuine, validated customer feedback provides businesses with the insights they need to stay on top of what their customers want and their purchasing experiences--whether good or bad. It provides the merchants we work with the opportunity to receive feedback in near real-time so they can make the customer shopping experience even better."

Introduced in 2012 by Cayan, with some foresight, the Genius Customer Engagement Platform accommodates multiple forms of electronic payments--MSR, EMV, NFC, and Mobile Wallets. As readers will recall, Cayan, and its integrated payments capacity, based on VARs and ISVs in POS, was purchased by TSYS in January 2018. Established in 2014 in the UK by CEO Georgina Nelson, TruRating has offices in Atlanta, GA. TSYS, which recently introduced its Vital POS Software Suite, with "Mobile," "Plus," and "Select," has its headquarters in nearby Columbus, GA.

A Revel-ation for Como

An enhanced relationship for customer engagement player Como (Fort Lee, NJ) and iPad POS provider Revel Systems (Atlanta, GA). The two companies, each of which plays in the channel, first worked together in October 2017. As functions, Como has marketing automation, mobile app, loyalty programs, and business intelligence. On its website, it identifies, as partners, many of the major players in POS.

"For the last 18 months, we have worked together to provide restaurant and retail chains with an integrated point-of-sale and customer engagement solution," recounted Yair Holtzer, President of Como America. "The combination of Como Sense's data-driven marketing tools with Revel System's powerful POS has enabled our mutual clients to deliver the right customer incentives at the right time." Some joint customers of Como and Revel Systems include Jack's Stir Brew Coffee, 7Leaves, Lemon Shark, Squisito Pizza, Pecos Pit, It's Boba Time, The Bean NYC, and Over the Top Cake Supplies.

Earlier this month, Revel Systems recast its product and market strategy. As its business platform, now, there's Revel Enterprise, and as its solution for SMB, there's Revel Essentials. "Revel has matured to provide much more than point-of-sale solutions," commented Greg Dukat, CEO of Revel Systems. "We now deliver a complete platform that enables the rapidly evolving digital commerce initiatives of our customers. This includes having an open ecosystem, key partners, and a broad set of solutions such as Revel Enterprise and Revel Essentials."

Code Corner

KOAMTAC (Princeton, NJ) has released its new software development kit (SDK) supporting Xamarin and UHF RFID. As Version 3.05.01, it updates KOAMTAC's SDK for iOS, Android, and Windows. A supplement to the company's products--barcode scanners, sleds for mobility, and readers for RFID--it includes application programming interfaces (APIs) for RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator). Addition of Xamarin enables integration of devices from KOAMTAC across networks with multiple O/S. As many readers know, app creation via Xamarin (now owned by Microsoft) utilizes one shared code for iOS and Android. Apps created with Xamarin have native user interfaces, native access to API, and native performance despite this shared code. A complimentary Version 3.05.01 SDK is part of the KOAMTAC Developer Program.

Agent "Get Smart" Barcode

Barcoding, Inc. (Baltimore, MD) has unveiled its new agent for tracking and reporting use of mobile devices by employees. Compatible with 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher Android O/S, so-called "Get Smart" was designed in response to customer request, according to Barcoding, Inc. Its partner, Zebra Technologies (Lincolnshire, IL), is the first mobile computing manufacturer to support the Get Smart App. (Premier Solution Partner Status in the Zebra PartnerConnect Program for Barcoding, Inc.)

As an overlay for existing mobility software, the Get Smart App allows managers to view user and device analytics, providing opportunities to efficiently match employee time and tasking with equipment. Additionally, it may add another layer of user accountability for damaged or misplaced equipment, helping to identify users who may require further device training, according to Barcoding, Inc. Along the same lines, it includes its "Find Me" to locate misplaced devices.

"A natural next step of device utilization management," suggested Greg Henry, VP of Client Solutions at Barcoding, Inc. "The industry lacked software tools with the capability to know which devices were in use by whom. Get Smart is a way to keep in-depth track of, in some cases, millions of dollars of hardware. We can keep these devices updated with mobile device management (MDM) software, and now we're taking it to the next level and providing a better understanding of where they are and who is using them."

Springboard: It's Getting Beta

A pair of interesting beta tests for ISV Springboard Retail (Boston, MA). In the first, it has debuted new functionality for its retail management platform, designated "Integrated Shipping Fulfillment." It allows brands and retailers to compare rates between shipping services, generate necessary shipping labels, track packages, and e-mail customers of package status "without ever having to leave the solution." As such, it eliminates the need for third-party fulfillment services or applications, according to Springboard Retail.

"Retail is changing," confirmed Abhay Kamble, Director of Product for Springboard Retail. "Today's customer wants to shop anytime, anywhere, and they expect their purchase to arrive almost instantly. We're excited to provide our retailers with this new feature, Integrated Shipping Fulfillment, which will help drive that customer convenience and experience."

In the second beta test, also as part of its retail management platform, Springboard Retail has previewed "Core Reports." Utilizing the retailer's data, it furnishes reporting in 12 categories across sales, inventory, customers, and payments (e.g., Net Sales by Sales Rep, Top Customers, Sales Tax Collected, Inventory on Hand by Vendor). It has been constructed based on feedback from Springboard Retail User Groups.

"Making decisions based on data is key for our customers," contributed Gordon Russell, CEO and Co-Founder of Springboard Retail. "This what they are telling us they need to stay agile and responsive to changing market conditions. We are pleased to release Core Reports which prods instant easy access to critical data across the enterprise for our brands and retailers--allowing better decisions to be made from the C-Suite to the sales floor. A lift in sales and margins will result."

A Sluice of Juice

Paytronix Systems (Newton, MA) has deployed its gift and stored value card platform for restaurant chain Jamba Juice. With approximately 800 locations worldwide, Jamba Juice will migrate more than 19 million cards across franchisees and third-party sales channels. It has integrated with Jamba Juice's new platform for POS: Toast (Boston, MA). Calling its solution "customer experience management," or CXM, Paytronix now ties to three dozen leading brands of POS.

"Jamba Juice has multiple types of comp programs and gift card offerings that give our guests the convenience of pre-paid, cashless purchases," relayed Jyoti Lynch, SVP and CIO at Jamba Juice. "We needed to automate the complex, manual process of accounting and reporting. Paytronix was not only the best choice to tackle the challenges of our POS platform migration and program's back-end administration, but also to position our program for future growth through their robust integration capabilities."

As specific characteristics, the Paytronix Platform includes proprietary money movement functionality, new promotional opportunities, and enhanced fraud prevention capabilities. Offered as software-as-a-service (SaaS), it accommodates sales via stand-alone terminals, mobile apps, and online ordering. "Digitized cards transform the way guests pay for orders, expediting this process both in-store and off-premise," noted Michelle Tempesta, Head of Marketing for Paytronix Systems. "It will also significantly reduce the overall time and effort that Jamba Juice spends reconciling and accounting for gift and comp card activity."

"At CardFlight, we are building great software that empowers small businesses not only to stay relevant with their customer's payment needs, but also provide them with easy-to-use tools that can streamline their operations [e.g., dashboard, inventory management, reporting and analytics]," expressed Derek Webster, Founder and CEO of CardFlight. "The number of merchants using SwipeSimple grew over 50% in 2018 due to the rapid expansion across services, retail, and food and drink businesses. The growth is a result of features added by CardFlight that focus on the needs of small businesses and I'm looking forward to even more innovation and growth in 2019."

At present, CardFlight works with 10 of the top 30 merchant acquirers in the U.S., and recruits ISOs, VARs, and ISVs on its website. On April 9 to 10, 2019, it will host its CardFlight Conference, christened "Empowering Small Business Together." "I would like to recognize our team's contribution to the success of our product and I look forward to celebrating this growth with our channel partners in New York this Spring," shared Marla Knutson, SVP of Strategic Partnerships for CardFlight, on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500.

"Retail as Retail"

-75% of consumers expect delivery of products purchased online to be free, even on orders under $50 (up from 68% in 2018).

-Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) demand free shipping the most, with 88% expecting it. That compares with 77% for Generation X (1965-1980), 61% for Millennials (1981-1994), and 76% for Generation Z (starting in 1995).

-Many consumers now consider shipping costs even before getting to the checkout page, with 65% saying they look up free-shipping thresholds before adding items to their online shopping carts.

-Consumers also want their products fast, with 39% expecting two-day shipping to be free, and 29% have backed out of their purchase because two-day shipping wasn't free.

-70% of consumers who are aware of buying online and picking up in store have tried it, mostly to avoid shipping costs. As most common approach: buy online and pick up at the cash register (tried by 83%).

-Also of interest: curbside pickup, wanted by 63% (and tried by 27%); delivery to car trunk, wanted by 56% (and tried by 19%); and retrieval from locker, wanted by 50% (and tried by 16%).

-"Consumers want free delivery, and they're willing to meet retailers halfway to get it," concluded Mark Mathews, VP for Research Development and Industry Analysis at the National Retail Federation. "And once they're in the store, they are very open to seeing what else the retailer has to offer. This is part of growing evidence that consumers see retail as retail regardless of how they make their purchases and get them."
