Trimble (Sunnyvale, CA) has outfitted its Yuma rugged tablet computer with an 80-GB solid-state drive, doubling the storage for software developers, field researchers, and mobile workers with heavy data and processing requirements. Also available with 32 GB, Yuma features seven-inch sunlight-visible touchscreen display in magnesium alloy shell. It comes sealed against dust and water with an IP-67 rating and weighs 2.6 lbs. with standard batteries. Performance parameters include an Intel Atom CPU at 1.6 GHz, integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and two digital cameras, as well as SDIO and ExpressCard slots. “Yuma has been a very popular mobile computer for customers that have needed a powerful Windows platform in very demanding environments,” reported Robert Davis, Director of Sales for Trimble’s Mobile Computing Solutions Division. “We are pleased to add the 80-GB SSD for more functionality.”

EchoPOS Calls Out to VARs

Interesting times for M-S Cash Drawer (Pasadena, CA), which has launched EchoPOS, its new entity for hardware, in conjunction with major OEM vendors in printers, cash drawers, and terminals. This new brand will focus on brick-and-mortar VARs and ISVs--as opposed to Internet resellers--seeking quality products with attractive margins, RRN.Com was told by Nash Kumar, Director of Sales and Marketing for M-S Cash Drawer. Ramped up this month, EchoPOS (signifying both “eco-friendly” and “economical”) will offer its channel partners the range of technical support, system integration, training and education, marketing services, and creative financing opportunities, in addition to hardware distribution, according to its new website at www.echopos.com.

As its first product, EchoPOS has stocked the CC-250 thermal receipt printer for retail and hospitality environments. Configured expressly to EchoPOS specifications, the CC-250 features, naturally, 250 mm/second print speed, as well as dual interfaces (USB/Serial and USB/Parallel) and 10-cm outside diameter paper roll capacity. It also offers three-year warranty, which Kumar deemed crucial given the reduction in technical staffs on the part of some VARs.

“We have been considering the launch of an alternative brand for some time,” Kumar told RRN.Com, adding the recent appreciation of Japan's Yen was pivotal in the timing of EchoPOS. Next for the brand will be cash drawers, to be followed by subsequent rollouts in additional peripheral categories. Also, leveraging its new resources, this week M-S Cash Drawer promoted an All-In-One POS terminal with bundled receipt printer for an additional $100. This system comes courtesy of EchoPOS and Pro-Tech Systems (Taipei, Taiwan). “A lot of VARs prefer to carry well-established brands in the industry,” Kumar said. “EchoPOS gives them another incremental choice for their cost-conscious customers.”

PEAK Higher, With Ryzex

PEAK Technologies (Columbia, MD) has snapped up Ryzex (Bellingham, WA), drawing together two of the most powerful Auto ID integrators in the industry. Founded in 1989, Ryzex has yearly revenues of approximately $75 million, with over 200 employees and more than 2,000 customers. For the past several years, it has focused heavily on the area of mobile device deployment. Financial terms of the sale--which neatly marries East and West Coast bases of operation--were not disclosed.

“Adding Ryzex into the PEAK Technologies portfolio further strengthens our commitment to our customers and business partners,” declared Ross Young, CEO of PEAK Technologies. “Our combined platform will provide an infrastructure of technical resources, project delivery capabilities, and ongoing mobile/printer device life-cycle services that is unmatched in the industry. It will help customers reduce the risk associated with large-scale project deployments and provide the advice, insight, and support to ensure our customers reach their desired business objectives.” An important component will be PEAK’s SAP supply chain capabilities.

“The focus for Ryzex over the past several years has been on providing leading-edge mobile technology deployment and support services for supply chain and field-based operations in North America and Europe,” relayed Rud Browne, Chairman and Founder of Ryzex. “During this period, we had been approached by several prospective partners who wanted to help us build on the value Ryzex had been bringing to the market. The opportunity to partner with PEAK proved to be the most compelling. In addition to providing additional growth capital for the business, PEAK also brought an outstanding and highly complementary infrastructure that has surprisingly little overlap with Ryzex’s already extensive technical expertise and geographic coverage.” According to reporting by the Bellingham Herald, Browne will move into consulting for Peak and Ryzex will retain its brand name, at least for the time being.

Retail in D-O’s Sights

Datamax-O’Neil (Orlando) unveiled the RL3, its direct-thermal, portable, three-inch label printer suitable for the retail environment. Displayed at the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York, the RL3 delivers ruggedness, reliability, and ease-of-use, according to the vendor, which has been shipping its RL4 four-inch model for some time. Like the RL4, the RL3 prints at four inches/second and 203 dpi. It measures 7.6 in. (H) x 5.6 in. (W) x 3.2 in. (D) and weighs 2.4 lbs. with battery. Orders for the RL3 can be taken immediately with shipments beginning in Q3.

“We conducted extensive market research and determined that customers needed a three-inch portable label printer that could operate for a full eight-hour shift and offer the durability to withstand the often rough-and-tumble environments mobile retail workers experience,” recounted Paul Weslake, Senior Product Manager at Datamax-O’Neil. As applications, Weslake pointed to price changes, inter-company transfers, warehouse storage, and mobile POS. He said Datamax-O’Neil plans to introduce several more products targeted towards the retail vertical market.

Through dual-wall construction, rubber bumpers, and magnesium and stainless steel casing, RL3 meets the MIL-STD-810 requirements of 26 consecutive drops at six feet to concrete and carries two-year warranty. Wireless integration into 802.11a/b/g infrastructures gets helped by Datamax-O’Neil’s NETira configuration and remote management software. To further integration efforts, the RL3 carries built-in ZPL, CPCL, IPL, XML, and ExPrint emulation, and provides compatibility with enterprise and legacy systems for enterprise resource planning.

Dr. Wasp Will See You Now

Looking to new vertical markets, Wasp Barcode Technologies (Plano, TX), well-known for Auto ID and POS for the SMB, has debuted its WWS450H 2D Healthcare Barcode Scanner. This new device features high throughput, wireless connectivity, and disinfectant-friendly, antimicrobial housing. Targeted uses include checking patient and prescription records, tracking medicine and hospital equipment, updating supply inventories, and entering two-dimensional and postal barcodes for shipping and receiving.

In performance, WWS450H features reading of 100 scans/second for one-dimensional codes (range of 20 feet) and 60 frames/second for two-dimensional codes (range of 12 feet). Wireless data transfer spans 295 feet from communication base with the capacity to hold 256 scans in buffer memory. Outfitted with USB, the base may be desk or wall mounted and can support as many as seven scanners. Finally, the device operates up to 16 hours on one charge, based on one scan per five seconds, and withstands four-foot drops to concrete. It runs 32 or 64-bit Microsoft Windows and carries an MSRP of $795.

Chasing the Big Boys at PayPal

With three cutting-edge payment players prominent at the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York--PayPal, Google Wallet, and Square--it’s evident that such schemes will continue their expansion into the offline world. Watch out, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. An interesting question now centers on what impact such inevitable growth will have on the POS community served by RRN.Com. Recent moves by PayPal hold some clues, as the fast-growing division of EBay reaches out simultaneously to retailers, OEMs, and, perhaps most significantly, ISVs.

This week, as widely reported, Home Depot will begin its installation of PayPal to its 2,200 U.S. locations, beginning with test runs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Under this set-up, consumers swipe their PayPal payment card or enter their mobile telephone number and PIN. Moving down the food chain, earlier this month, PayPal also entered into partnership with payment processing hardware supplier, Ingenico (Atlanta). Under terms of this agreement, Ingenico will integrate PayPal payment into its devices, providing immediate access to millions of shoppers. “PayPal’s vision for the future of shopping includes people making purchases anytime, anywhere, and over any device,” indicated Don Kingsborough, VP of Retail and Pre-Paid Products for PayPal. “Ingenico is helping PayPal realize this vision by putting PayPal in stores and at the point-of-sale.” PayPal has made similar headway with VeriPhone.

Further, in terms of channel strategies, at NRF PayPal disclosed its new relationship with AJB Software Design (Mississauga, ON, Canada), the payment and services provider, perhaps foreshadowing its pursuit of POS ISVs. Working together, the two companies will offer Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for POS, making it easier for the developer’s customers in retail to offer PayPal as an in-store payment option for shoppers, who can access multiple processors and loyalty products with the PayPal wallet. AJB’s Retail Transaction Switch will provide the framework for this hierarchy. Times they are changing, as someone sang in the 1960s.

Apple Drops on Aruba

Seems everyone wants to sell mobile POS. Now Aruba Networks (Sunnyvale, CA) has pushed into the market through its partnership with Infinite Peripherals (Irvine, CA) and LightSpeed (Montreal), revealed at the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York. This configuration combines Infinite Peripherals’ Linea-Pro barcode scanner/credit card reader with LightSpeed's Apple-based Mobile POS software, to be supported by Aruba access networks based on the Mobile Virtual Enterprise, or MOVE, architecture. In addition, Aruba’s Mobile Device Admission Control helps ensure that smart-phones and tablets can be shipped directly to stores for quick and easy self-provisioning by general sales staff.

“Apple revolutionized the retail industry with the introduction of smart-phone-based point-of-sale systems in its stores,” maintained Manish Rai, Head of Industry and Solutions Marketing at Aruba. “Having tested the waters there, consumers are increasingly demanding the same experience from other stores where they shop. This solution is designed to ensure that retailers of all types can provide that high level of customer experience and the associated sales lift.”

In support of his theory, Rai cited Aruba’s recent survey of retail IT leaders, showing 56% plan to upgrade in-store Wi-Fi in 2012 to support advanced applications such as mobile POS. Similarly, 56% of respondents said that they would be rolling out Apple iPads and 38% said they would be deploying iPhones to their staff as part of these solutions in 2012. Aruba Networks also announced that retail chain Aaron’s, Inc. has installed the Aruba MOVE platform at more than 1,800 stores across the U.S. and Canada. In selecting the vendor for its mobile network, Aaron’s placed high priority on security, and deemed Aruba superior in this regard, according to the two parties.

Continuing to address the changing retail IT market from many directions, NCR Corporation (Duluth, GA) has extended its NCR Predictive Services to its RealPOS workstations. Already offered for NCR’s self-checkout devices, NCR Predictive Services seeks to anticipate system failure before it happens, reducing downtime and improving store productivity. It works through an embedded software agent on each NCR device, gathering comprehensive operational data which then gets processed through the NCR Services data warehouse. From this analysis, recommendations are made for preventive action due to end-of-life or imminent failure of devices and modules. NCR made its announcement at the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York, during which the company also previewed its first cloud-based POS software platform targeting “entrepreneurial brick-and-mortar merchants and service providers without traditional storefronts.” Supporting both NCR’s POS touchscreen terminals and Apple’s iPads, iPods, and iPhones, this solution is expected to be widely available in the spring. Retailers can download the application directly from Apple iTunes, or leverage preconfigured NCR terminals. For Apple devices, an optional sled with barcode scanner and magnetic-stripe reader can be added for checkout, inventory, and credit card processing. “We are passionate about helping small merchants run and scale their business, connect with customers across channels, and sell anywhere,” shared Christian Nahas, VP of Specialty Retail for NCR. “We are actively talking to all types of organizations who sell to small businesses and the feedback has been overwhelming. They can’t wait to take this product to their customers.”

Intermec: Series 70 Supercharged

Intermec (Everett, WA) has powered up its 70 Series ultra-rugged mobile computer family with the addition of the new Texas Instruments’ OMAP 3715 CPU at 1 GHz and wide-area flexible network radio based on Qualcomm’s Gobi 3G technology. Offered for three of the four 70 Series models--the CN70, CN70e, and CK70--these new features allow firms with global deployments to procure and support one wireless device that works on multiple networks while reducing their investments in spare device pools, according to the vendor. Intermec, RRN.Com readers will recall, introduced its 70 Series last January as its next-generation computing platform with vertical market configurations, common software, and shared peripherals.

At 1 GHz, the multi-engine processor from Texas Instruments provides customers with one of the fastest, most responsive platforms in the market. In addition, the 70 Series maintains its state-of-the-art power management and battery performance to avoid unnecessary downtime, according to Intermec. Based on Qualcomm’s Gobi 3000 embedded module, the flexible network radio supports both CDMA and UMTS wireless architectures, and when complemented with Intermec’s middleware, delivers automatic and seamless “in route” switching between carrier networks.

“By incorporating these industry-leading enhancements, Intermec vastly reduces connectivity limitations with the ability to deploy the 70 Series on virtually any 3G network and increases the speed of business with faster processing power,” remarked Earl Thompson, SVP of the Mobile Solutions Business Unit at Intermec. “This increased flexibility reinforces Intermec’s commitment to delivering best-in-class rugged mobile computers with the capabilities necessary to conduct business anywhere, anytime in the field.” Earlier this month, Intermec also provided enhanced food traceability for LoBue Citrus in California. An end-to-end solution combines the company’s printer and data collection hardware with software from FoodLogiQ (Dunham, NC) and has improved accuracy to nearly 99%, according to participants.

Omnii Advantage Pursued by Psion

Psion (Hebron, KY) unboxed its new Omnii XT15 handheld device, which boosts functionality while maintaining the company’s philosophy of modularity. Key features include an upgradeable, rugged design, multiple data capture and connectivity modules, eight interchangeable keyboard formats, and tri-sensor technology of accelerometer, digital compass, and GPS. XT15 runs Windows CE 6.0 or Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 on the Texas Instruments AM3715 Sitara ARM CPU at 800 MHz with 256-MB RAM and 1-GB Flash. Expanded wireless capabilities include 802.11a/b/g/n, while high-capacity 5000-mAH rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery with smart technology enables continuous run time of 20 hours.

Going beyond its baseline modularity, Psion’s Omnii Advantage Program allows customers to repurpose their devices free of charge at any time after one full year of ownership. For example, the customer can start with two-dimensional barcode scanner and switch out that module with an RFID reader as the market moves to that technology. This eliminates the need to replace the entire product and satisfies customers expecting their platform to last more than three years, often cited by end-users as minimum desired service life.

Wavelink Washes Over Android

Wavelink Corporation (Salt Lake City, UT) has extended its Terminal Emulation (TE) to accommodate Android-based devices, including Motorola’s ET1 rugged enterprise tablet. Wavelink TE, RRN.Com readers probably know, represents the most widely deployed software for hosting mobile devices, in use on more than four million endpoints worldwide. It provides the capacity to accept data from multiple input sources such as scanning, voice, RFID, keyboard, and touchscreen. Both Wavelink TE and Wavelink Avalanche for mobile device management now support Android, Jay Cichosz, VP of Marketing, emphasized to RRN.Com during the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York.

“Many organizations are rapidly adopting new smart devices in their warehouse and field operations, in addition to traditional ruggedized mobile devices,” advised Cichosz. “Now we see the emergence of ruggedized smart-phones and tablets running Android that are developed specifically for heavy industrial use. With added support for Android, we are ensuring our customers have the flexibility to choose the devices and applications best suited to them with the assurance that they will be able to fully utilize Wavelink’s mobile enterprise solutions.”

At NRF, Wavelink also launched Wavelink Velocity, its new Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP) that more effectively delivers web-based applications to rugged mobile devices. Velocity employs open-source architecture to standardize the user experience across multiple platforms including Windows, Windows Mobile, Windows CE, Android, iOS, and Palm WebOS. Unlike traditional browsers such as Windows Pocket IE, which were not built for wireless connections, according to Wavelink, it renders pages reliably and quickly in today’s network environments.

Motorola Solutions (Schaumburg, IL) drew an enormous crowd to its exhibit at the recent National Retail Federation Show in New York, with its typically powerful mix of point-of-service, data collection, and communications. In particular, RRN.Com was directed to the new Proximity Awareness and Analysis Solution during its tour by Juliann Larimer, VP of Worldwide Channels. This scheme uses advanced analytics to display information collected from the in-store WLAN infrastructure. It shows customer traffic in real-time, in other words, allowing the retailer to engage customers on their mobile phones along with amassing business intelligence for improving store operations. Proximit Awareness also incorporates an open API architecture allowing third-parties to build upon data collected from the system.

At NRF, Motorola also introduced its MC2100 industrial mobile computing series. Targeted at the “value tier,” and the SMB, the MC2100 encompasses five configurations with three different scan engines, options for batch and WLAN, and vertical-specific accessories. About the size of your television remote, it measures 6.8 in. (H) x 1.3 in. (D) x 2.4 in. (W), weighs about 8 oz., and runs Microsoft Embedded CE 6.0 and 802.11b/g/n. Significantly, it supports HTML5 via Motorola’s RhoElements application enablement framework. MSRP starts at $850.

“We are excited about the opportunities in the marketplace with Motorola’s new MC2100 mobile computer,” testified George Zicman, SVP of Sales for Quest Solution (Eugene, OR), one of Motorola’s channel partners. “The MC1200 satisfies the demand by many of our customers for a rugged mobile computer with color touchscreen, data capture capabilities, and Wi-Fi at a very competitive price. In conjunction with our software, it’s an excellent fit to manage inventories and improve efficiencies for our retail and pharmaceutical customer base.”

Holiday shopping wasn’t cheerful for many Americans this past season. According to the new survey from Aldata, 31% of in-store shoppers discovered that their desired product was out of stock. And after encountering empty shelves, nearly half of these customers (46%) left for competing merchants. In terms of vertical segments, 56% of shoppers experienced out-of-stocks at food and beverage retailers, followed by toys (39%), apparel and footwear (39%), consumer electronics (30%), and video games and consoles (25%). Looking ahead to 2012, more than half of survey respondents (55%) said they plan to spend less this year. Top ways to save will include: using coupons (70%), taking advantage of pricing promotions (68%), and buying cheaper brands (51%) and generic/private labels (48%). Another survey finding: shoppers familiarize themselves with store layouts, so when retailers make changes, they add significant time and bother for their customers. More than one-third of shoppers (38%) claim changes to store layouts leave them “annoyed,” with an additional 28% feeling “frustrated.” In the case of grocery, 30% of shoppers estimate that layout changes add more than 10 minutes of wandering each week. “Today’s shopper is tight on time and money,” observed Allan Davis, CMO of Aldata. “Retailers should be doing everything in their power to provide the best possible store experience to meet their evolving needs. That means precise demand forecasting to ensure shelves are never empty, and optimizing the store floor to avoid constant layout changes.”

Georgia on SATO’s Mind

SATO America, Inc. (Charlotte, NC) has enlisted Gregg Davis as its new Southern Region Sales Manager. Reporting to Robert Linse, President of SATO America, Davis will be responsible for the continued development and growth of channel business through new and existing reseller partners, according to the barcode printer, labeling, and RFID supplier. He will be based near Atlanta, Georgia.

Davis brings extensive experience in his area of focus, in particular for supply chain, healthcare, and mobility. Prior to SATO, he served in similar southern regional sales positions with DigiPoS Store Solutions and CAS USA Corporation. Before that, he held sales management posts with TSC America, CognitiveTPG, and Toshiba TEC USA.

“Gregg joins SATO with over 18 years of experience within our industry and has a demonstrable track record of supporting a large base of channel partners like SATO’s,” commented Linse. “As a seasoned professional, he has the abilities to immediately and positively impact the highly valued reseller partners within his region.” In December, SATO America announced its purchase of Argox Information Co., Ltd. (Taipei, Taiwan), which focuses on the mid- and entry-level arena for label printers, barcode scanners, and portable data terminals and has significant penetration into emerging markets.

Channel VP at AccuCode’s “Service”

AccuCode, Inc. (Centennial, CO) has advanced its partner efforts with the hiring of Todd Baillie as VP of Channel Sales. Baillie comes to the system integrator from LXE (now part of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility), where he spent nine years helping to develop that manufacturer’s reseller network through titles such as Distribution Sales Manager and Channel Sales Manager. Before LXE, he served for an equal time as Business and Sales Manager for Intel at Arrow Electronics.

In his new role, Baillie will be responsible for the growth and development of AccuCode’s AO: Channel Program, which currently includes six “As a Service” offerings: AO: Communications, AO: Compliance, AO: HaaS (Hardware-as-a-Service), AO: LifeCycle (depot repair), AO: ProServe (professional services), and AO: Rapid Inventory. Baillie expressed excitement over the opportunity to make this suite of technology solutions more widely available. “AccuCode has been a leader in the ‘As a Service’ model,” he said, “so the natural next step is to develop a world-class channel around our products.”

AccuCode announced its AO: Channel in July in order to engage resellers. “Our 15-year track record of growth proves that AccuCode knows how to build scalable and repeatable solutions,” stated Kevin Price, Founder and CEO of AccuCode in making the call. “Our organization has spent years pioneering enterprise mobility, cloud computing, and the ‘As a Service’ model but we don’t have the sales footprint to fully recognizable the value of what we have built. At the same time, the partner needs scalable, repeatable products and recurring revenue streams.” A major shift in AccuCode’s go-to-market strategy, Price termed the program.
