This Week’s Product Pick

ID TECH (Cypress, CA) has debuted its new PCI 3.x SRED certified keypad and three-track magnetic-stripe reader, the SREDKey. Measuring 6.3 in. (L) x 3.8 in. (W) x 1.5 in. (H), and powered by USB, the SREDKey features comfortable keys and 2x20 LCD. It supports TDES and AES data encryption using DUKPT key management. Each SREDKey is assigned an unique serial number for tracking purposes. Encrypted data output with confirmation in clear text form is programmable up to the first six digits and the last four digits of the account number. For increased protection, SREDKey has several operational security levels. "The SREDKey is an upgraded version of the SecureKey M130 with physical security protection to prevent card data compromise," explained Candy Han, Product Manager. "Also, backwards compatibility makes it perfect for clients who want to replace the SecureKey M130 with the SREDKey."

Musings on Micros

It's confirmed that Micros Systems (Columbia, MD), one of the most prominent names in POS, will be acquired by tech giant Oracle (Redwood City, CA), for $5.3 billion, or roughly 25 times earnings. This transaction will close in the second half, and until then--and likely for some time thereafter--Oracle and Micros will continue to operate independently, with business as usual. In making the announcement, both companies cited growing technologies such as the cloud, social media, and the Internet of Things (IoT)--ironically areas where neither has stepped too lively.

With its deep roots in software and hardware for POS, and 330,000 sites, Micros immediately furthers Oracle's play in foodservice and hospitality, of course (100,000 of those sites in retail, as well). Perhaps Oracle wants the data gathered by the Micros POS. Perhaps Oracle needs stronger growth and sees verticality as an easy, and maybe only, pathway (thanks to Salesforce.com). Perhaps Oracle feels it can pull customers of Micros POS into its sophisticated, expansive packages for Marketing, Supply Chain Management (SCM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Human Resources. Or perhaps Mark Hurd, Oracle CEO, too fondly remembers his twenty-five years at NCR (and five at HP).

"Micros' management and employees will form the new dedicated business unit within Oracle to maintain their focus on serving customers," remarked Bob Weiler, EVP of Oracle Global Business Units, in the official announcement. "Our industry organizations maintain deep domain expertise and focused investment, which includes more than 18,000 Oracle employees, $38 billion in revenues, and over $500 million in annual R&D spend. This model has proven highly successful across several industries, and we look forward to bringing these same benefits to the customers of Micros." Also, it should be noted that Micros has long run the Oracle Database.

The British Tablets Are Coming

Another tablet-POS hopeful, Powa Technologies, based in the U.K., has forged new partnerships for software and distribution of interest to readers of RRN.Com. Its hardware bundle, dubbed the PowaPOS T-Series, consisting of tablet, receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, payment terminal, and expansion port station, will now be handled through POS Portal (Sacramento, CA). Unveiled earlier this year, PowaPOS also features its PowaPIN, described as the world's smallest reader of EMV Chip-and-PIN. Once again, an international vendor sees EMV as an entry point into the U.S.

Simultaneously, Powa Technologies has joined forces with ISV iConnect (Greenwood Village, CO), led by Subodh Gupta, Founder and President. iConnect's iOS tablet software provides merchants with the expected range of customizable, consolidated services. Features include inventory tracking, employee management, multiple language and multi-location support, real-time reporting, customer relationship management (CRM), and e-mail and text message marketing. It also furnishes online booking and appointments, with reminders and confirmations.

"Partnerships like this are essential for meeting the momentum behind tablet-based POS systems," confirmed Buzz Stryker, CEO of POS Portal. "Being able to provide hardware like the ground-breaking PowaPOS platform combined with iConnect's tablet software will help us meet the growing demand from our customers who want to provide tomorrow's payment solution today." Founded in 2000, POS Portal configures and ships merchant-ready platforms for ISVs, ISOs, and VARs.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

An Ambidextrous MC3200

Motorola Solutions (Schaumburg, IL) has unwrapped its third-generation mid-range mobile computer, the MC3200, intended for maximum flexibility in both functionality and O/S. Offered in "Standard" (Windows Embedded Compact 7.0, Dual Core 800-MHz CPU, 512-MB RAM, 2-GB Flash) or "Premium" (Android 4.1, Dual Core 1-GHz CPU, 1-GB RAM, 4-GB Flash), the MC3200 retains the design philosophy of the MC3000, which allows customers to mix and match three form factors and three keyboards. A "straight shooter" MC3200, without rotating turret or pistol grip, measures 7.5 in. (L) x 3.2 in. (W) x 1.8 in. (D) and weighs about 13 oz.

For communications, the MC3200 carries 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth Version 2, and advanced features for voice-directed application support. Its data collection capability includes the company's SE965 one-dimensional scan engine with adaptive range or SE4750-SR two-dimensional scan engine with extra wide field of view. As software, the company offers its remote management scheme, Extensions by Motorola (Mx), as well as the cross-platform RhoMobile Suite and the new Enterprise Mobility Developers Kit (EMDK) for Android.

"During the last decade, MC3000 mobile computers have been successfully deployed around the world in both large and small organizations, and the new MC3200 will continue that tradition as an investment that customers can count on to help improve worker productivity," declared Joe White, VP of Enterprise Mobile Computing for Motorola Solutions. "With the MC3200 expanding the industry's largest portfolio of Android-based mobile computers, only Motorola Solutions can provide companies with the ability to deploy Android-based mobile computing solutions across the enterprise--from the front of the store, back into the warehouse, and out into the field." Naturally, there's compatibility with peripherals and accessories for the forerunner MC3000.

Panasonic's Little Toughie

Panasonic Corporation (Newark, NJ) has presented its fully-rugged, five-inch handheld tablets for mission-critical environments: Toughpad FZ-E1 with Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld and Toughpad FZ-X1 with Android 4.2. FZ-E1 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Series 2.3-GHz Quad Core CPU and FZ-X1 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Series 1.7-GHz Quad Core CPU (for both, 2-GB RAM, 32-GB Flash, and Micro-SDXC Card Slot). Weighing 15 oz., with thickness of 1.2 inches, these devices have 6200-mAh, hot-swappable, 14-hour batteries.

Additional features include sunlight-readable, anti-reflective, high-definition (1280x720) display, ten-point capacitive multi-touch capability with rain resistance, and cameras in front (one-megapixel) and rear (eight-megapixel). As options, both integrated one and two-dimensional barcode readers and attachable magnetic-stripe readers are offered. In addition, these two new tablets have added voice connectivity in the form of dual SIM slots and 4G LTE/GPRS/CDMA 2000 mobile broadband. Standard on both are Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth Version 4, GPS, and Near-Field Communications (NFC).

Surviving drops of up to 10 ft. on concrete, the Toughpad FZ-E1 and FZ-X1 exceed MIL-STD-810G specifications. Both devices are fully sealed against dust and are submersible in up to 5 ft. of water for 30 minutes, meeting IP-65 and IP-68 certification requirements. They carry an operating temperature range of -4 to +140 Degrees F via built-in heater, with FIPS 140-2 Level 1 security. Panasonic Corporation, which distributes through ScanSource POS and Barcode (Greenville, SC), has set an MSRP below $2,000 for all configurations.

Pioneer Days for dsiPDCX

Two stalwarts in our channel, Pioneer POS (City of Industry, CA) and Datacap Systems (Chalfont, PA), have addressed secure payments. Going forward, All-in-One Terminals from Pioneer POS, including the X5, StealthTouch, and the S-Line (with built-in printer from Epson), will support Datacap's dsiPDCX technology. Introduced in 2011, dsiPDCX utilizes Datacap's popular NETePay integrated payment processing software, alongside Peripheral Device Controller, in order to provide out-of-scope status for PA-DSS for the POS app.

Since many card-entry devices are supported by dsiPDCX, Pioneer POS Terminals now have instant access to the Windows Control (including ActiveX) "which provides POS applications with the ability to process an extensive assortment of electronic payments in a multi-tiered client-server architecture without handling sensitive cardholder data such as account number, expiration date, CVV/CID, and PIN," elaborated Justin Zeigler, Marketing Director at Datacap Systems. "POS providers that utilize Pioneer POS now have access to an out-of-scope payments solution that is streamlined and completely integrated, requiring no additional hardware."

"In today's climate where more and more data breaches are commonplace, Pioneer POS and Datacap Systems are really at the forefront of securing payment for our customers," indicated Gee Singgih, CEO of Pioneer POS. "I couldn't be happier that we can now offer our customers even more solutions." So far, this year has been busy for Pioneer POS, with launch of its ACE Partner Program and additional distribution through BlueStar (Hebron, KY).

A Quest for Zatar

Zebra Technologies Corporation (Lincolnshire, IL) has signed up Quest Solution (Eugene, OR) for its Internet of Things platform, called Zatar. Launched in 2013, Zatar draws together legacy and smart devices, such as printers, RFID, and iBeacons, into its cloud-based methodology for IoT. It enables third-party applications to easily work with the device over an open-source Application Programming Interface (API), according to Zebra. In May, Zebra added American Barcode and RFID (Phoenix) to Zatar.

"Through our long relationship with Zebra, and now Zatar, we have simultaneously expanded our service offering and ability to attract new clients to Quest Solution," testified Jason Griffith, CEO of Quest Solution. "Zatar provides another high-efficacy element to an already robust, market-proven suite of technology under the Quest Solution banner." Over the past two decades, Quest Solution has grown into one of the largest system integrators in Auto ID & Mobility, with support for JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and SAP.

"Zatar is an innovative new offering from Zebra Technologies. As Quest Solution drives deeper into application and solutions development with our customers, the Zatar platform has tremendous appeal," enthused George Zicman, SVP of Sales for Quest Solution. "We have been one of Zebra's partners for many years and are excited to offer this exciting new product in our solutions portfolio."

LightSpeed (Montreal) has offered Advanced Reporting for LightSpeed Cloud, which adds data analysis to its iPad-based POS, thereby extending real-time insight into sales, inventory trends, and customer preferences. Advanced Reporting for LightSpeed Cloud includes more than 40 reports that give detailed information in critical areas: product sales, profits, and margins; customer preferences; employee performance; payment methods; and vendor-by-vendor comparisons. A "highly visible" real-time dashboard, accessible via web browser or mobile app, displays performance across all stores, and the new "stats" panel shows best and worst performers across locations, according to LightSpeed. In addition, Advanced Reporting for Cloud helps retailers to predict sales, inventory needs, and revenue based on historical trends and external factors like weather and holidays. It also captures customer preferences across online and offline channels, indicating purchase history, favorite items, and other customer insights that fuel successful loyalty programs. "With Advanced Reporting for Cloud, we're delivering to retailers the kind of data analysis normally associated with large-scale Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Business Intelligence, but in an easy-to-use format and at cloud price," maintained Dax Dasilva, CEO of LightSpeed. An introductory rate of $19 per month, per store, has been publicized.

Tracking Your Shift, Via Lavu

Advancements keep coming for iPad POS. As one example, Lavu (Albuquerque, NM) has addressed staff scheduling and store floor coverage with its new employee portal. By logging into my.poslavu.com, staff members may request or accept shift trades, change settings and contact information, and view and print weekly schedules. Such schedules are made in the account's control panel, and posted in real-time to the shared employee portal. This new functionality has been supported by customer traffic and labor data analysis in the software.

In addition, Lavu has employed RFID for increased security at the POS. Assigned cards for each staff member will improve clock-in/clock-out procedures and administer actions such as voids, refunds, or price adjustments, according to Lavu. Simple card reader integration enables this functionality via RFID. As expected, this latest version of POS Lavu may be downloaded from the Apple App Store.

"We introduced my.poslavu.com in response to customer feedback" revealed Corey Fiala, CTO and Co-Founder of Lavu. "The new shift manager feature will allow staff to search the entire schedule for shifts that need to be covered, and allow them to put their own shift up for grabs when they need to take the day off. Having this centralized location to view and trade shifts will make employees' lives easier and will free up extra time for management."

No Check-In for Data Breaches

PAR Springer-Miller (New Hartford, NY) has drawn upon Shift4 (Las Vegas) and Global Payments (Atlanta) to offer its "Secure Payment Solutions" framework for the hospitality industry. Spanning both POS and Property Management System (PMS), Secure Payment Solutions will support all of PAR Springer-Miller's products--Atrio PMS, Atrio POS, SMS/Host, SMS/Touch, and SpaSoft. Participation of Global Payments' Integrated Solutions Division was led by Eddie Myers, President, whom RRN.Com readers may recall as President of PayPros, which Global Payments purchased in January.

"The PAR Springer-Miller SPS product, combined with secure gateway technology from Shift4 and integrated payment technology from Global Payments, brings an extremely robust solution to the hospitality market," emphasized Larry Hall, CEO/President of PAR Springer-Miller. "Efforts of this type and magnitude require shared vision and desire to address this very real issue in the industry without hesitation. I'm delighted with the depth and breadth of the products and services PAR Springer-Miller, Shift4, and Global Payments have created for our industry."

"We've spent the past two decades pioneering payment security technologies for the hospitality space," recounted Shift4 CEO Dave Oder. "We're pleased to be partnering with PAR Springer-Miller to incorporate all of our current security technologies into their Secure Payment Solutions. Not only will they have our P2PE solution encrypting card data at the point of swipe, and True Tokenization securing data at rest, but this solution will also deploy our patented 4Res technology to tokenize data coming from the central reservation engine--truly preventing all cardholder data from entering the hotel's environment."

Eye Exam at Microscan

Microscan (Renton, WA) has stocked its Vision MINI Xi industrial camera for assembly line manufacturing and component tracking. Described as the world's smallest smart camera with embedded Ethernet and Serial, Vision MINI Xi allows flexible positioning in tight spaces with physical measurements of 1 in. (H) x 1.8 in. (W) x 2.1 in. (D) and weight of 3.2 oz. It includes processor, auto-focus lens, and illumination in this compact package, which is encased in durable magnesium alloy.

As part of the vendor's AutoVision product suite, Vision MINI Xi satisfies the need for robust inspection, color matching, symbol decoding, and optical character recognition (OCR). Examples of applications include dot-peen marks on power-train components, laser markings on medical devices or printed-circuit boards, and traditional printed barcodes on packaging and labels. Focus ranges from two to six inches, with choice of CMOS sensors--WVGA (752x480), SXGA (1280x1024), and Color QXGA (2048x1536). High-output LEDs provide light in demanding settings.

Microscan's smart cameras run on AutoVision Software with user-friendly interface, step-by-step guides, and library of presets that allow easy set-up and deployment, according to the company. For advanced users and more complex applications, Visionscape Software provides more than 50 machine vision tools. Recently, Microscan released AutoVision 3.0 with so-called "CloudLink" web-based HMI, advanced IntelliText OCR, and four password-protected security levels.

Mangia on Mobility

Customers at Tarry Lodge Enoteca Pizzeria, the new eatery by Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich in Westport, Connecticut, will notice an entire emphasis on mobile POS. Supplied by Infinite Peripherals, Inc. (Elk Grove, IL) and Digital Dining/MenuSoft (Springfield, VA), this system employs twelve Linea Pro 4 credit-card sleds for iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 from Infinite Peripherals (which also goes by "IPC"). B&B Hospitality Group, the holding entity, reportedly engaged IPC and Digital Dining from the very beginning of planning, with no thought of stationary POS.

"We worked closely with Digital Dining to configure the screen app the right way so that our servers could find the items they needed very easily," relayed Maciej Wojcicki, Director of IT for B&B Hospitality. "We also conducted extensive training with our servers to ensure that the handheld is part of the entire service equation and is almost invisible to our customers throughout their dining experience. Our servers focus on the customers, not the device, and the system has been designed perfectly with that goal in mind."

Several specific benefits were cited by B&B Hospitality. First, table turnover was increased by 15 minutes. Secondly, servers have the luxury of taking partial orders, such as drinks from the bar, while continuing to talk about food specials. Finally, credit cards may be processed in front of customers, helping to reduce fears of data theft. "We're thrilled that we were able to partner with Digital Dining to yield such great results for Tarry Lodge, and we look forward to working with the B&B Hospitality Group in the future," observed Victor Bobadilla, Channel Development Manager at IPC.

Rewards for America's Diner, Hon?

Denny's, the family restaurant chain with 1,600 franchised and company-owned locations, has engaged Paytronix Systems (Newton, MA) for its pilot test loyalty program. Paytronix has formalized its marketing efforts in this area, under the name "Express Pilots," in order to entice multi-unit chains with its suite of mobile payments, promotions, and guest messaging tools. Integrated with Digital Dining, PAR PixelPoint, Positouch, Micros, Sicom, SpeedLine, and Xpient, the Paytronix Rewards Platform extends features such as account look-up, check-level control, store and forward capability, and central configuration updates.

"As America's Diner, it's crucial that we engage and communicate with our guests in a meaningful way that enhances their experience each time they walk through our door," proclaimed Erik Jensen, Director of Advertising and Merchandising for Denny's. "Working with Paytronix Express Pilots has enabled us to quickly and efficiently roll out the test program, 'Denny's Diner Perks,' that will help identify and analyze our guests' dining habits and needs through targeted reward structures and messaging strategies to see what resonates best with them. Ultimately, the results from this test program may be used to determine ongoing guest-centric promotions and future core and limited time product launches."

"Paytronix specifically designed Express Pilots to help its enterprise restaurant customers cut through the time and technology constraints previously required to design and launch rewards programs," noted Andrew Robbins, President of Paytronix Systems. "From pilot commencement to the full roll-out decision point, we provide the industry's most reliable program data and enable pilot operators to compare their results to our trusted industry benchmarks. Chains quickly get the information they need to make data-driven recommendations to their executive teams, boards of directors, and franchisees."

Channel Factoid

"With four years of data, we're now really beginning to see some interesting trends, such as the five-fold increase in SaaS adoption to 74% and the nearly six-fold increase in PaaS adoption to 41%," reports Michael Skok, Founder of the Future of Cloud Program and General Partner, North Bridge Venture Partners. Some select highlights from his research may be of interest. Approximately half of responding companies (49%) are using the cloud to fuel revenue generation or new product creation, while 45% say they already, or will in the future, run their company from the cloud--showing how integral cloud has become to business. Adoption of SaaS has risen from 13% in 2011 to 74% in this year's survey, yet in the enterprise it still serves mostly to transition existing applications. Here, the front office is leading the way with sales and marketing (51%) and customer service (43%). It's not just SaaS, as 56% of businesses are using Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to harness elastic computing resources while 41% are using Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to prototype and develop new applications. Finally, two-thirds of respondents believe their data will come to reside in some form of the cloud over the next two years as big data needs consolidation, and collaboration and creation move online. "New applications, which are only possible in the cloud, will result in an order of magnitude greater value creation than the first cloud front," predicts Skok at North Bridge Venture Partners. "This second cloud front will be transformational."

An Armada at Harbortouch

Harbortouch (Allentown, PA) continues to build its executive team with strategic hires. Most recently, two new Directors have been added to its Major Accounts Division: Reagan Davis and Tom Williams. Both bring many years of experience in POS.

Most recently, Reagan Davis served as VP of Business Development for NetPOS. Earlier employers have included Hospitality Solutions International, Micros, Agilysys, and Squirrel Systems. For his part, Tom Williams most recently served as Senior Sales Manager for Squirrel Systems. Earlier in his career, he spent nine years with Micros. Harbortouch also has enlisted George Chadwick, formerly of Heartland Payment Systems, as its Chief Financial Officer.

"We entered 2014 with a number of ambitious goals to grow our overall operations," remarked Jared Isaacman, CEO of Harbortouch. "We have begun executing on this plan with recent acquisitions, the expansion of our corporate headquarters, and numerous other significant investments in our infrastructure. We are committed to transitioning from a mid-size player in the payments space to become one of the dominant companies in global transaction processing and POS solutions. These key positions add to our already robust management team and represent another step towards achieving this transformation." Just recently, Harbortouch enlisted two new National Sales Managers in the VAR Channel: David Cuppett and Timothy Hills.

RRT: Oh Dahrling!

Restaurant Revolution Technologies (San Diego), which supplies foodservice take-out systems, has recruited Eric Dahrling as its new VP of Operations. Prior to joining RRT, Dahrling served as Director of Support Operations for Skylight Healthcare Systems, which also involved HL7 Interface Development and Inventory. Before that, he worked in a variety of operational and senior management positions at several high-end and high-volume restaurants throughout Southern California. His responsibilities at RRT include client services, training and quality assurance, call center, and overall company IT.

"RRT's vision to make take-out ordering a more robust, efficient, and profitable solution for restaurants addresses a major pain point and huge need within the industry," volunteered Dahrling. "The RRT order management solution, supported by its call center, online, and mobile order processing platforms, is absolutely best-in-class, and they understand restaurant operations deeply. How we continue to serve our clients by continually exceeding customer satisfaction service standards will significantly impact the industry."

"We are pleased to have Eric with us as part of the RRT team," commented David Schofield, CEO of RRT. "His unique client service, operations, and customer support background is perfectly well-suited for our organization. RRT has realized tremendous growth within the restaurant industry and in order to maintain our operational plan and to provide the enterprise level of service our clients demand, we need the extensive and broad experience Eric provides."

Troy has the acumen, vision, and energy needed to take TSYS further along its journey to be the leading global payments solutions provider."

M. Troy Woods started his career at Columbus Bank and Trust Company in 1970, working part time in the bank card department and eventually becoming VP. He left the company in 1977 to become SVP of Consumer Lending for AmSouth Bank, then rejoined TSYS in 1987 and directed the company's international expansion, strategic planning, major client negotiations, and the company's launch of TS2. "It is a tremendous privilege to serve this great company and team members who are passionate about the business and totally committed to improve lives and businesses by putting people at the center of payments," stated Woods.
